Causes

A tear (rupture) of the anterior cruciate ligament is one of the most frequent injuries of the knee joint; approximately three-fourths of all cruciate ligament ruptures occur during sport activities. A rupture occurs generally during simultaneous flexion and rotation of the knee joint. The ligament is exposed to a particularly high amount of stress if the knee is pressed during outward rotation from the foot simultaneously into a valgus position or during inward rotation into a varus position. If the stress exceeds the strength of the ligament, the ligament tears.
